Work Experience
Oct 2000-Oct 2009 Volunteer for the Ruamkatanyu Foundation in Thailand: Emergency Medical Technician/Fire Rescue worker and First Aid/CPR instructor (First ever foreigner certified in Thailand to work for the Thai Rescue Service). All of which I have received medals from both the Thai and NZ governments for. Owned and managed my own ambulance and rescue team, Public Relations for Ruamkatanyu.Recently published a book called “Sleeping with the Dead” about my life in the Rescue Service.
April 2007-April 2009 Taught American Literature at an international High School in Thailand, to Grade 8 and 9 using American Text books and syllabus. Lessons revolved around computer presentations and interactive class participation. The job also involved integrating Thai Students into western style ‘free thinking’ based teaching and away from ‘wrote learning’ Thai teaching.
April 2005-April 2007 Teaching at Srivikorn Business School teaching fundamental English to students in 16 to 25 year olds. I developed programs as well as assist in the K1 to G6 English program. In the evenings I taught corporate English all over Bangkok.
April 2004-April 2005 Eastern College of Technology, Thailand, teaching fundamental English to English major students at the Foreign Language Institute and part time at Burapa University.
From 26th Dec 2004 to 9th Jan 2005 I worked for Ruamkatanyu in the recovery and identification of bodies after the Tsunami and also liaising with foreign media/officials and relatives of the deceased.
2004 Jan to May. Managed the installation of a new interactive phonics program for a ‘Hogwan’(After-school tutoring centre)in Korea. Installed and trained staff how to use the new system effectively.
2002-2003. Academic officer in International Relations for Ramkhamhaeng University (RU), Thailand, one of the world’s biggest Universities with more than 600,000 students. Most of my work was policy advice, analytical research, web site content, overseeing the student enrolment process and overseas satellite exam centers using available IT resources, assessing communication infrastructure of RU and reporting and made recommendations of these things to management.
Sep 2001 to Sep 2002 Worked at Hua Chiew University teaching various English courses. I also researched and wrote my own Socio-linguistics course book.
(1999-2001) Worked for the NZ Dairy Board (now Fonterra ), managing milk powder exports to the Japan/Korea market, exporting products in excess of USD 10,000,000 per annum. Dealt with all aspects of production timelines, quality control, documentation, shipping logistics, finance, customer care, forecasting, data base maintenance, communication with offshore staff/sales people, complaints management.
1997-1998 I worked in Korea as a Marketing Manager for a small Korean trading company (Korea International Trading). Tasks involved setting up and managing a website and customer database, customer liaison and correspondence, identifying new markets, sales and contract negotiation. One out of every four weeks was spent in Japan.
1992-1997 Because of my language abilities, I worked at Victoria University’s prestigious English Language Institute as an assistant teacher, teaching basic to academic English to students from various countries but predominantly Japan.
I also managed my own distribution company employing several people for Perky Publications developing and expanding their readership base. I also owned and operated an Internet company providing multilingual web page design and database services employing 5 people.
1985-1991 I studied Electrical Engineering. I firstly completed an Electrical apprenticeship of 4 years in an Industrial based company and then carried on my work and part time study at various other companies, including as a Property Manager for Stone Key Trading managing of over 70 residential properties in the Wellington area.Also during this time I was a member of the NZ Auxiliary Police force for 5 years.
Diverse work history
Having such diverse careers as Teacher, Rescue Worker, Electrician, Property Manager, Multi-lingual web site Manager, Author, Import/Export Manager, Linguist and International Relations Advisor, I believe has made me a dynamic adaptable person who can see any task as achievable.
My strengths lie in my determination to get any job done, having a very strong understanding of other cultures and languages and having a global outlook on everything I do.
Some of my favorite personal achievements are being the first foreigner to ever be a certified rescue worker in Thailand, being able to speak 4 Asian languages, receiving a medal from the NZ government for my humanitarian work and also a medal from the Thai government for my work in the Tsunami, and finally, having my autobiography published.
